Frequently asked questions

  • What is a bill of lading (B/L)?

The bill of lading is the document in which the carrier confirms that it has received the cargo for shipment. It is evidence of the contract of carriage and, when issued as a negotiable original, a document of title: the cargo is then released at destination against the original bill.

  • Should I choose FCL or LCL?

If your cargo fills most of a container, FCL is usually more economical and involves less handling. For smaller volumes, LCL lets you share container space with other shippers and pay for the space you use. The choice depends on the volume, the delivery date and how sensitive the goods are.

  • What are demurrage and detention?

Demurrage is charged when a container stays in the port or terminal beyond its free time. Detention applies when the container is kept outside the terminal beyond its free time. Planning customs and transport together helps keep these waiting times short.
